The staff at Providence Medical Center's Medical-Surgical Unit provides comprehensive acute hospital care for patients with a broad spectrum of medical and surgical diagnoses.
The Medical-Surgical department, located on the fifth floor, is a 71-bed inpatient unit consisting of private and semi-private rooms. With a staff of 135 and an average patient to nurse ratio of one to five, patient care is provided around the clock in a holistic, nurturing environment to adolescents, younger and older adults.
The staff looks beyond the diagnoses and delivers nursing care on the physical, emotional and social level to both patients and their family members.
The nurses, patient care technicians, certified nursing assistants and unit secretaries maintain their skills and professional growth through continuous education in areas such as:
- Advances in medicine, surgery, and nursing interventions and care
- EKG monitoring
- Pharmacology and pain management
- Customer service.
- The ability to work with other healthcare disciplines — physical therapy, occupational therapy, palliative care, nutrition and respiratory therapy — helps the staff in the delivery of care and meeting patient needs.
Nursing care does not end with the hospital stay. With the support of case managers and social services, a continuum of care is extended after discharge from the hospital.
